MRS. SOPHIE DZIEWURSKI
Of Huntsville

The family of Sophie Dziewurski are saddened to announce her passing at Fairvern Nursing Home on June 13th, 2020.  Beloved wife of George Dziewurski for 73 years, cherished mother of Christopher (Christine) and much loved Babcia (grandmother) to Jeremy and Camille.  Predeceased by her siblings Halina and Stanley, survived by her sister Donna, sister-in-law Helen and nieces and nephews.
Sophie was born in Bialystok, Poland in 1925.  After the Soviet invasion of Poland, Sophie and her family were sent to Siberia to the Gulag labour camps.  When she was released at 16 years of age, Sophie joined the Polish Army, and under General Anders command was sent to the Middle East for training with the Polish A.T.S. (Auxiliary Women’s Army Service).  Her mother (Valeria) and siblings were accepted into Mexico as refugees.
While serving in Italy as a munitions truck driver delivering weapons, gas and other crucial supplies to the front line, Sophie met her future husband, Lieutenant George Dziewurski.  They were married in England in 1947 (Foxley Camp, Hereford) where they lived for one year after the war was over.  They then immigrated to Argentina.  Sophie often spoke fondly of those years in Buenos Aires where her son Chris was born.
Sophie later reunited with her mother and siblings in 1959 when she immigrated to Canada with George and Chris.  Sophie first worked as a seamstress in the Spadina garment district in Toronto.  This job was the major contributor to her Granddaughter Camille’s extensive collection of custom Barbie doll outfits.  Her last job before retiring was with Timex Industries where she worked for many years as a watch technician. Upon retirement, Sophie and George headed to Doe Lake, Katrine, where they created countless happy memories with their family and friends. Sophie loved working in her beautiful gardens.  She was also an exceptional cook and numerous people remember her wonderful dinner parties.  Sophie will be remembered fondly by her family and friends as a loving, kind-hearted woman.  In her later years Sophie moved to Huntsville with her son and his family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Chris and family would like to thank the staff at Fairvern for the loving care she received there over the last 5 years.  A graveside service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
