With family and her dear friend Faye by her side, Verna Annie Louise Sohm passed peacefully on Wednesday May 13, 2026.
She is survived by her sister Lorna Dennis (late Stuart), her brother Mervyn Sohm (Micheline), sister Elaine Sohm and sisters-in-law Thelma and Rosemary. She is predeceased by brothers Doug and Keith Sohm. Verna had a close relationship with her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and will be deeply missed by them all. Verna will be fondly remembered by her former colleagues at North Bay Hydro where she thoroughly enjoyed many years of service. She was proud of the fact she managed more retirement years than working years.
Verna was born at the Sohm family farm on June 22, 1942. She was a local icon and a long-time member of the South River Curling Club as well as various bridge clubs. She was an avid farmer and enjoyed spending time on her beloved piece of family property. Verna pioneered the Canada Day fireworks celebration on Eagle Lake, spending many hours canvassing to present a fantastic yearly event. Verna was unique, fearless and independent in the way she lived her life. She was kind and helped many people without claiming any credit.
Verna’s boathouse was a well-known landmark on Eagle Lake as a unique party place and a navigational beacon to head home after the fireworks.
A memorial honouring Verna’s life will be held on Friday May 29, 2026, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 467, 10383 Hwy 124 in Sundridge with visitation from 2 to 3pm until time of service at 3pm with Reverend Catherine Murkin officiating.
If desired, memorial donations to Little Paws Pet Rescue or the Cancer/Oncology Clinic at the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Opatovsky Funeral Home-Moore Chapel in Sundridge.
