Roger Simmons

d. September 8, 2017

ROGER BAILEY SIMMONS of South River Roger Bailey Simmons died on September 8, 2017 in his 88th year. Survived by Olive Wilson, his partner of 12 years, along with his 5 children (Roger, Don, Karen, Jerry, Katrina), 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife and mother of his children, Jackie (nee Moore), and his eldest son Bruce. Roger was a one-of-kind man who defied stereotypes. Educated and well-read, he identified more with native, nature-centered cultures than his Euro-centric contemporaries, preferred the solitude of the bush and farm to the excitement of urban living, loved kitchen parties, jazz music and good wine. He trained as a forester but turned his hand to anything to feed his family, from farming and factory work, to high school teaching and construction. He instilled in his children his love of a well-researched debate, world politics and the collective wisdom of Canadian First Nations. His wit, intelligence and open mind will be sadly missed by his family and the close friends that cherished his adventurous spirit. Family will receive visitors at the Opatovsky Funeral Home - Moore Chapel, 9 Paget Street in Sundridge on Wednesday September 13, 2017 from 2-4 P.M. If desired, memorial donations to the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
