June 3, 1928 — April 28, 2018

ORMOND ROBERT McGIRR June 3, 1928 - April 28, 2018 Cherished family man, Ormond McGirr passed away peacefully in his 90th year with his family by his side at Muskoka Landing in Huntsville, Ontario on April 28, 2018. Beloved husband of 64 years to Beth (nee Harkness). Loving father of Steven (Shelley), David (Patricia), Andrew and Jane (Jamie). Proud and devoted grandfather to Jeffrey (Kimberly), Christopher (Himani), Lauren (Timothy), Ashleigh (Mike), Matthew, Timothy (Dana), Justin, David, Kristen (Amrithal) and Christina. Orm will also be sadly missed by sister Jean, in-laws Betty, John and Ross, his nephew and many nieces. Predeceased by father Clarence, mother Aileen and in-laws Norm and Fran. Orm will always be remembered for keeping us smiling with his never failing sharp wit and kind nature. Orm was born in Young, Saskatchewan and grew up in South River, Ontario during the Great Depression, which left an indelible imprint. He graduated in math and physics from Queen's University in 1951 and went on to obtain a Masters degree from University of Toronto. He had a brief career as a meteorologist stationed in Gander, Newfoundland and then at the Malton Airport. Orm went on to a distinguished 34 year career with the Bell Telephone Company in Kitchener, Toronto, Hamilton, Montreal and Ottawa. A brilliant mathematician, blessed with an encyclopedic memory, Orm was charged with complex tariff calculations that would now be done by a computer. He found tremendous fulfillment in his service to Toastmasters where he held roles as District Lieutenant Governor and President. His happiest times were at his cottage on Lake Bernard in Sundridge where he loved to swim, boat, fish, garden, golf, play bridge, and spend time with his family and ten grandchildren in the summer. A celebration of life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday June 16, 2018 at Zion United Church, 49 Main Street, Sundridge. The family will greet visitors at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Memorial Fund at Zion United Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Opatovsky Funeral Home - Moore Chapel, 9 Paget Street in Sundridge. 705-384-5802 The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Muskoka Traditions and Muskoka Landing for the compassionate care Orm received. Special thanks to his personal caregiver Madison who enriched his final year.
