William J. (Bill) deVries
Bill first came to Sundridge at the age of 17, and here he has shared the better part of his life with his loving wife of 62 years, Marilyn deVries (nee Johnstone). Together they have three children, Debbie, Suzanne, and Gregory, and eight grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his sister Ina.
Many of you knew Bill from his years of steadfast service to his community. Whether he was advocating for fellow neighbours as a Village of Sundridge Councillor, acting as the Chair of Almaguin Highlands Community Living, or dedicating 30 years to teaching at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School, he consistently left a positive impact on those he worked for and with.
If you had the pleasure of knowing Bill, you knew he was a wealth of knowledge and always happy to partake in a lively discussion. He liked to read several newspapers each morning to keep up to date on current events, local and global in reach. His favourite spot in the summer was sitting on the deck with his wife looking out on the lake together.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. The family will receive visitors at the SSJ Arena, 14 Albert Street North in Sundridge on Saturday June 24 from 11am until 1 pm. A service to celebrate Bill’s life will follow commencing at 1pm with Rev. Lori Campbell officiating.
Interment of ashes will follow in Strong Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Almaguin Minor Hockey Association (PO Box 999 Sundridge ON P0A1Z0) or charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Opatovsky Funeral Home-Moore Chapel in Sundridge.
