Passed away peacefully at Huntsville Hospital on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in his 82nd year.
Beloved husband of Shirley Greib (nee Howe) with whom he shared a lifetime of love, friendship, and the rewarding journey of raising a family together. Cherished father of Lowell Greib, and Alanna Bernacchi. Proud grandfather of Beckett, Islette, Anja and Colter.
For more than 30 years, Barry inspired generations of students as a teacher at Almaguin Highlands Secondary School. A passionate chemist and lifelong educator, he had a remarkable ability to spark curiosity and a love of learning in those around him. Recognizing the importance of emerging technology, he was among the first secondary school teachers to introduce computer science into the classroom, sharing his enthusiasm for innovation long before it became commonplace.
His curiosity extended far beyond his profession. He enjoyed cycling and cross-country skiing, finding peace in nature and great companionship in the dogs he loved throughout his life. A devoted Macintosh computer enthusiast, he delighted in exploring new technologies and was always eager to learn something new. His quiet intellect, thoughtful nature, and genuine curiosity defined the way he approached both the world and the people in it.
Music was another lifelong passion. He was a dedicated member of the North Bay Symphony Orchestra, where he played 1st violin with both skill and joy. His appreciation for the instrument extended into the workshop, where he carefully crafted violins of his own—a testament to his patience, precision, and artistry.
Above all, Barry was a devoted family man. Though reserved by nature, he expressed his love through steady support, thoughtful advice, and reassuring presence. His children always knew they could count on him for guidance and encouragement. He was kind, well-intentioned, and giving with his time, leaving a lasting impression on family, friends, students, and colleagues alike.
Despite his many intellectual pursuits, he also appreciated life's simple pleasures, including relaxing with a good beer in the company of family and friends.
Cremation has taken place at Forest Lawn Crematorium. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the family plot. Arrangements have been entrusted to Opatovsky Funeral Home-Dempster Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the new Almaguin Highlands Secondary School bursary supporting students pursuing studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), a fitting tribute to a teacher whose greatest passion was helping young minds discover their potential.
